Clarinetist Vanessa Davis is a performer and music instructor based in Texas with extensive experience performing and teaching. She is endorsed by Buffet Crampon whose instruments she plays exclusively.
As a performer she is equally as at home in the orchestra as she is in the wind band or in chamber music or even playing alone. Dr. Davis has performed both nationally and internationally as a soloist.
With a combined fifteen years of teaching across all levels she is committed to training the next generation to love music through performance of the clarinet and believes all students can be successful. She regularly gives masterclasses and clinics throughout Texas and the United States.
A writer, Dr. Davis has been a contributor to the International Clarinet Association Journal, The Clarinet as well as the Symposium Journal of the College Music Society, the Journal of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and The Instrumentalist. She also is frequently invited to give presentations and talks at national and international conferences.
Her primary areas of creative scholarship include concept-based pedagogy, unaccompanied clarinet music, and teaching the whole student. She is currently working on a book about concept-based pedagogy.
An advocate of new music, Dr. Davis has commissioned a number of works for the clarinet alone including Countermeasures for Bb clarinet alone by Theresa Martin, Here Now for Eb clarinet alone by Luke Ellard, and Terrestrial, by Erin Cameron. She also commissioned The New Colossus by Sy Brandon for clarinet and electronics.
