Summer Lessons

  • Very simply, my job is to teach the students in the way that they learn most effectively at all levels so the more I learn about the student from them, their parents, and their directors the better lessons will go for everyone.

  • Students may opt for summer lessons for a variety of reasons:

    • Get a jump on Region and All-State Music for the Fall

    • Refine on skills that they worked hard on during the school year, but maybe didn't have time to master

    • Continue a trajectory of improvement for future success

    • Take the time to play music or learn skills they didn't have time for during the school year

    • Maintain a sense of normalcy during the often nebulous summer months.

  • In my experience students who take lessons over the summer are

    • More successful in school placement auditions

    • More successful at District, Region, and All-State auditions

    • Generally more prepared for band in the fall so they enjoy band more

    • Get more college music scholarships

    • Learn how to budget time differently than during the school year

  • As a result, summer lessons can take a variety of forms:

    • Regular weekly study with a week or two break for family vacation

    • A month of study, two months, or all summer.

    • Study beginning in July to prepare for Region and All-State

    • Study beginning in August to get back in shape for school

  • The purpose of lessons is to cement and augment good habits of clarinetistry and musicianship in each student. A misunderstanding that commonly occurs is that lessons are "remedial" or for only students who don't understand, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Lessons can help students who are having a hard time, but are intended also to deepen and strengthen understanding of all students so that they can not only be successful but understand why they are successful rather than just parroting a band director.
